What’s In a Name?

what's in a name - lyndurante.com

My last post in this blog has been exactly five days ago. Although I have been trying my best to make sure I write daily, it seems that a few days ago I was really busy tweaking some features on my self-hosted site LynDurante.com. And whether you believe it or not, I was working on my About Me page for two days. Well, you can tell I was really writing from the heart.

But, oh, it was a great mindfulness exercise! I was awestruck doing it. In fact, along the way I get to understand the meaning of my name and I’m loving it more! Believe me, I’m an introvert and this helps me enormously.

If you would allow me, I would like to share them with you.

Lyn is a nick name that my family calls me since I was little. Growing up, various people who come to know me have called me in different lovely names. However, it is only now that I will embrace the “Lyn” name deeply. Researching about it, “Lyn” used to be a famous name for boys rather than girls in the early 1950’s. It has a German, Hebrew and Spanish origin that has various meaning such as a tree, leader or lion-like. Later when used predominantly for girls, it was derived from the name Linda, which means beautiful. I love this last meaning of course! Because it’s something that I need to be reminded of always!

What’s more enlightening? When I googled “Durante“, it gave me a Spanish translation that writes “During“. There you go! Ultimately, I had my aha moment. I am convinced that I should start owning my story and believe that I can be of inspiration in some ways to others.

It is when I combined the meaning of my name Lyn Durante – that I appreciated it. It is “Beautiful During“. Well, it seems queer if I leave it at that, right? So I had to tweak it in a way that would also summarise my purpose for opening a blog. Therefore, I changed it to “Beautiful Moments in Time“.

This is now a perfect tagline for my Travel and Happiness Blog – LynDurante.com where I aim to share our family travels, fun memories and inspiration. I have always loved travel, photography, kids fun and all things inspirational which have also become my roadtrip back to happiness.

After going through depression for a while, unhappiness is not a strange word for me. It is only until I realised how being happy had to be a daily decision that I slowly get back on track. And truly, writing has helped me discover myself again as go over my scribbles.

Thus, from now on, I hope to be wearing a new pair of glasses and change my paradigm. I will choose happiness always everyday. I will remain thankful for all the opportunities and blessings that come my way. These two will be my habit towards happiness goals.

In fact, I got so hyped up that I consequently decided to make a logo –

This is going to be a new life mantra for me to focus on beautiful moments – perfect or imperfect.

Moreso did you know that there is one meaning of Lyn that I also really love? It was from the Welsh. And I shared it in my about page, at nearly the last part.

Overall, hopefully it makes sense more now why I am using it as my domain name. =) (Well actually, I’m just kinda forgetful and boring, thus I used my name.)

Thanks a lot for reading! Don’t forget the like, comment or share.

Light Bulb: Persistence

Inspired by today’s Daily Prompt, made me look something up in the dictionary. Not using the search-type-enter kind of thing online we usually do these days. Rather, utilising that one descriptive book I have grown up with, where we have to manually scan through pages alphabetically, word after word. Yes, what I meant was using the Oxford English Dictionary.

Well, before the new millennia, especially if you’re born in the 80’s or earlier, I believe that’s the stuff we do, right? There isn’t google, youtube, bing and other search engines to go to yet. In those years, information is not as accessible, compared to now that everything is by the tip of our fingers.

I remember that if I have to research on something, I need to go to the nearest library or that one we have in school. Go over the catalog, search through titles, subjects and author – data that might be helpful in the fact-finding mission. Check if the books are available. Write down the book’s location and call number. Find it among tons of books lined up on shelves. Then loan from the librarian.

So, it is but natural back then to know that if we want to search for something, we go through a bit of labor before we get that “aha” moment! Doing so, instills patience and perseverance. That one trait that we no longer use as a bridge between a question and an answer. Or in the same parallel thought as a with a dream and an achievement.

Such that, generations of today – such as my kids, when they ask something, it goes like this – “Mom, what is a gear? How to make a machine? Can we please google it and check on youtube?” Well, there’s nothing wrong with that as long as it inspires us to do something greater.

Just like Thomas Edison’s story – in finding ways to make the light bulb work, he has gone through 10,000 experiments and failures before it became a success.

On the other hand, James Dyson, a household brand for quality vacuums, said this too, “I made 5,127 prototypes of vacuums first before I got it right.”

Indeed, if we truly have the desire and are avid at something, it is but essential to have forbearance and resilience if we want to make things happen.

Therefore, let me leave you with a question while quoting Mary Kay Ash’s opinion on three different types of people:

  1. People who make things happen
  2. People who watch what happens
  3. People who wonder “What Happened?”

Which ones are you? (via Survive)

Leave me your thoughts below.

Wisdom on Life: This Too Shall Pass

These are the words from my teacher in High School that I surely will not forget. She said, “Every time you are in your low moments of your life, there’s no point in wondering or dwelling on it too much. It will only make you feel depressed. What I advise you to say to yourself is – This Too Shall Pass. Continue reading

Don't Grow Up. It's a Trap.

Yes! Don’t Grow Up! It’s a Trap! We saw these prints on a shirt for kids. Danger was at the back.

I admit! Adulting is kinda hard. And I just wish sometimes that I am back to being a kid. Don’t you? I mean, I reckon that when one becomes a grown up, naturally, we want to become more responsible. As well as more in control and careful with our actions. What is more challenging is – when you’re a grown up, you have bills to pay!

So, to remind us once again on how great is it to be kids, here are statements from the kids themselves:  Continue reading

Only Few Friends are for Lifetime

My feeling now is better than when I was writing my last blog post – “Don’t Forget To Say I Love You“. My husband is recovering fast and thank God for the gift of friends and pals “online” who are able to journey with us in this ordeal.

Wait what? — “Online” friends? Yes, you have read it right! Continue reading

Don’t Forget To Say “I Love You”

man in hospital bed

What is it like to lose a loved one? I don’t wanna know.

Minutes from now, my husband is about to undergo an open surgery in his abdomen. It is his first time to be going through a major operation with general anaesthesia. Anxiety and fear are slowly getting into my nerves. Worry is making my head heavy. I don’t think no one will ever be ready for anything like this no matter how learned a person might be. Negative thoughts are creeping in. Continue reading

No One Else Can Do It But You

“Hi There! How are you?” I hope your day today is a bit different from yesterday. If yesterday seemed dull and lifeless, I wish it full of happiness and inspiration today. If it was however good already, I want that it will be more inspirational! =) So, allow me to share to you this song – “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, which reminds us to go out of our shell, decide to be happy and just write our own story. And, yes, no one else can do it for you but you!

Hope you like this video with its lyrics available to sing your heart out.
